Ima Llama

I've been a mostly silent, but active, member here for 9+ years...and yet i know (of) many of you. Almost daily, I upvote a number of vids and seethe over Siftbot's denials of my rare downvotes and privileged requests. Seeing Oritteropo's Galaxy status, I am reminded that I need to bump up my own profile here. Thus, I have decided to peep in the forums, so for my first trick, I'll feign ignorance and ask all of you what is the best way to get integral here.

I mean to say, that I love this community and have found it quite valuable for a number of reasons. The ebb and flow suits me and has become my go-to site for any number of moods I may be in. I just want to find a way to finally give back in a small way.

And a shout out to ant, as he was my introduction to this site via Blues News.

ps- I would like to earn my first star before I hit 10 years, you know.

As long as you are enjoying yourself here, you are doing awesome. The sift mechanics in awarding members to more "powers" is unfair to many sifters, as they are solely based on videos sifted. The powers that be are willing to make changes but we have to let them know what it is we would like to see changed.

Having checked the star power guide, bronze gets you quite a long way... downvote, *dead/*notdead, lengths etc. and only needs another 18 sifts.

I'll cheerfully donate some video suggestions to post and/or send promotes or powerpoints your way, let just me know.

you ppl are awesome...I lurk enough on YouTUbe & the likes, but I live on my phone which is dreadfully slow, and a pain in the ass to upload a video from, so by the time i get to my laptop, my "find" is already "found". I'll work through it; no policy changes need per my option. I'll just be more here here. Cheers

You know, by awarding @oblio70 with a pp for this sift talk post, you've pretty much proved your statement wrong

It's not solely videos posted, you can also get star points by posting sift talk posts that are worthy of a *quality

Yes i was aware. I don't think accumulating points from quality sift talks is a reasonably viable way to move up in star rank. Technically i should have said mostly instead of solely, but i think the points are so negligible to not even consider them as a way to move up rank.

I lurked for over a year here before I started posting but found that once I did any questions I had were readily answered by other sifters. If you can get to the late night talk show clips before others, it's a good way to move up. Otherwise, I personally frequent a couple other sites that other sifters don't seem to go to. Other than that, I type in keywords on YT then filter out older results. I get a lot of misses, but every now and then I find something that's unique. Plus I get to see a lot of foreign stuff I never would have otherwise.

Back before Google bought youtube and added a personal filter bubble, you used to be able to just keep clicking the recommended videos until you ended up on the weird side of youtube... that always used to throw up a few gems.

It's much harder now... but your approach is a good approximation. Watch a video, work out what keywords would find it, do a search for recent videos with those keywords.

Preferably in an incognito window to dial back the filter bubble a notch.

It's not the way to get ruby star or a crown, but for long time members who don't really post much in the way of videos it could help get bronze. This is particuarly the case if they're only a few star points short of the 25.

I miss those old rabbit hole days. It never occurred to me to go incognito. I'll definitely give that a shot. Thanks!

You know, I bet some bright web developer (@seltar? Are you still out there?) could even script up the process... grab keywords, initiate new search, filter to new.

Alternatively, try replacing q=things with better queries in this search:

https://www.youtube.com/results?sp=CAI%253D&q=things

Just be careful what you search for at work.

Reddit video, Break-dot-com, and those kind of sites are good for a few videos. Just look for hot or popular videos on those sites that haven't been Sifted yet. You've been on the Sift long enough to probably to recognize the kind of stuff that will get Sifted compared to the trashier videos. Anything from Last Week Tonight will get Sifted, but you've got to be quick on the draw (as in, online immediately after the episode airs) in order to get a clip up before someone else does. But it's a guaranteed Top 10 video if you do manage to snag it first.

Submit your 3 vids a day, use beggar's canyon if a video gets to 7 or 8 votes (discard stuff that only gets 2 or 3), and I'd guess that within a month you'll have your bronze. Then you can kick back and not submit anything ever again if you don't feel like it.

One day later than my 10-year anniversary, but I made it to my Bronze. Thank you all so much for your support, suggestions, and upvotes!

I'm a real boy!
